What Oil Does Chick-fil-A Use?
Chick-fil-A cooks its hand-breaded chicken in fully refined, heat-processed peanut oil. Because the oil is highly refined (refined, bleached, and deodorized), the peanut proteins are effectively removed, and the U.S. FDA does not classify highly refined peanut oil as a major food allergen. That said, the kitchen shares cooking and prep areas, so Chick-fil-A can't guarantee any item is free from cross-contact — anyone with a serious peanut allergy should check with the restaurant. Waffle Potato Fries and hash browns are cooked separately in canola oil.
Gluten-Free at Chick-fil-A
Chick-fil-A's kitchen is not certified gluten-free, but a few items are made without gluten ingredients:
- Waffle Potato Fries and hash browns — cooked in a dedicated fryer, separate from breaded items (the strongest gluten-friendly win).
- Grilled Nuggets and the grilled filet — no breading (cooked on a shared grill surface).
- Most dipping sauces and many salad toppings.
Breaded items — the fried chicken sandwiches, Nuggets, and Chick-n-Strips — contain wheat and are not gluten-free, and Mac & Cheese contains wheat. Gluten-free bun availability has varied by location and time, so check what's offered locally. If you have celiac disease, tell the staff so they can take extra care.
Main Allergens
Common allergens across the menu include wheat, milk, egg, and soy; some items contain or may contact others. Because ingredients and preparation vary, always confirm current allergen details for a specific item on Chick-fil-A's official allergen information.
